Beginnings
I started swimming competitively in Nashville, TN for a summer league team at 5 years old. I remember winning lots of races in those early years, especially as a 7 & 8-year old. My family was always supportive, especially my Dad. He encouraged me to always give it my best effort and never quit. One summer swim meet during the 50-yard butterfly, I stood up and grabbed the lane line before finishing the race. I was disqualified! My father told me no matter what happens, just keep swimming as fast as you can until you reach the other end. Those "never give up" and "you can do it" words from my Dad always stayed with me!!! When I was 8 years old, I placed first in the 50-yard backstroke in the Nashville City Swimming Championships.
When I was 11 years old, one of the boys who swam on my team beat me all summer long! I asked him how he had gotten faster and he said he swam AAU all year around. I went home and asked my parents about swimming AAU and to my surprise they said yes!
I ran track one year and played one year of football but those other sports seemed to get in the way of swimming (the sport in which I excelled). So, I focused all I had into swimming year-round from that point forward.
High School and College
By having a couple of tremendous influences like Coach Joel White, the late Coach Dick Guyer, and Coach Mark Bernardino and swimming year-round, my times improved significantly.
I set high school records in Pennsylvania and was named High School All-Conference, All-State and All-American. I was also a Junior National Gold and Silver Medalist.
As a first year student and a scholarship athlete at the University of Virginia, I qualified to compete in the United States Olympic Swim Trials in Indianapolis. That same year, I also set collegiate school records. By my forth year was named All-Conference and NCAA Division I All-American.
Lifeguarding and Coaching and More
After receiving my Lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor certificates, I taught Beginner and Advanced Beginner swim lessons for the American Red Cross in Cincinnati, Ohio. Here in Chattanooga, I coached the Greater Chattanooga Aquatic Club during the summer while in college. After college, I was an assistant coach with the Swim Atlanta team. As an adult, I earned my Open Water Scuba and also Rescue Diver certifications.
I also have certifications in First Aid, CPR, and BLS (Basic Life Support), which I maintain for my work in the medical field as well as for providing you a safe experience in the water.
I have always been passionate about all things water related! Today, I still enjoy swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, boating, kayaking, canoeing, boogie boarding, and body surfing- but most of all- I like to teach and coach to see the improvement in others.
